Does my local GP practice offer ear wax removal?
Most GP practices used to offer ear syringing. Following a recent change by the the NHS, most patients are now no longer able to have ear wax removed for free by the NHS. Ear wax removal using microsuction is now the preferred approach.
Do I need a referral from my GP for ear wax removal?
No, you can book directly without needing a referral. If you are unsure if your ears are blocked by wax, we can do an initial assessment to confirm if microsuction is required.
Do I need to do anything to prepare for my ear wax removal appointment?
We advise our patients to use medical grade olive oil to soften the ear wax prior ear wax removal. Olive oil encourages the natural movement of wax from the outer ear by softening it. Normal olive oil works just fine and a ‘dropper’ can be bought from your local pharmacy. Alternatively, pharmacists also sell olive oil spray for ear wax softening.
Does microsuction hurt?
No, the microsuction should not cause any pain during ear wax removal. Some patients say it is a bit noisy and others have reported a tickling sensation during the procedure.
How often will I need to have my ears cleaned by microsuction?
Every patient is different and there are many reasons why ear wax can build up and become problematic. Most people who suffer from ear wax will need microsuction once or twice a year. There will be a small minority that will need microsuction more frequently.
I have a perforated ear drum or have previously had a perforated ear drum that has now healed. Can I have microsuction?
Yes, microsuction removes the ear wax from the outside via suction. It is far safer than ear syringing which rinses water into the ear to dislodge the wax which can place pressure on the ear drum and sensitive canal walls.
Is it safe to fly after microsuction?
Yes, it is perfectly safe to fly after having ear wax removed by microsuction
Are there any side effects to microsuction?
The most common side effect following ear wax removal is some dizziness, faintness or vertigo during or shortly after the procedure. This is temporary and is due to the fact that microsuction lowers the temperature of the ear canal. And, as with any procedure, there is a small risk of infection.
Do you offer evening and weekend apppointments?
